What is it?
Dry needling is a tool to help manage muscular pain. The needle is inserted into the trigger point (tender/sensitive/painful spot along the muscle) of the muscle. (Above I am working on this patient’s upper trap due to neck/pain on the top of his shoulder.)
How does it work?
It decreases the sensation of tightness, pain, and sensitivity due to stimulating the nervous system. By placing the needle into the trigger point, it elicits a local twitch response, which is an involuntary muscle contraction.
What conditions is it helpful for?
It helps with muscular pain and tightness that can cause a decrease in range of motion, a referred pain to a nearby area or muscle in the body.
What is the difference between Dry Needling and Acupuncture?
Dry needling and acupuncture use the same monofilament needles (very thin). Acupuncture places the needles along the meridians of the body. Dry needling inserts the needle into the trigger point of the muscle to elicit a response.
