What is foot doming?
Foot doming refers to working on strengthening the small intrinsic muscles that make up the arch in your foot. We need to make sure after you learn how to perform this, we add it to other activities or exercises we are working on so it translates into function.
It is important for people: post-op, who have been in a boot or cast, people with able sprains, people with plantar fasciitis, and people with foot/ankle pain to be able to work on foot stability and posture.
Your foot/ankle posture can also affect how your knee and hip move in space to compensate for foot posture. Sometimes we have to address the ankle for a hip issue and vice versa. This is why it is important to get to the root cause of pain or injury. As well as get your foot in the right posture for the entire leg!
How do you perform doming?
Make sure you take your shoes off for this so you can see your feet and feel the feedback from the ground.
Incorporate into Function
So you learned how to dome standing on both feet, now what? Unfortunately we don’t spend life standing on both feet equally weight bearing through each side. It is important to work on the doming in other strengthen exercises you are performing in your program. For example this would be in a split squat, a SL RDL, step downs, etc. I like to incorporate it in single leg dominant exercises for client, and just like when learning, I have their shoes off.
Have an ankle sprain, plantar fasciitis, achilles tendonitis or another foot/ankle injury? I am accepting new patients now. Check out my options here, and feel free to book a initial consultation to see if we would be a good fit here.
