Winter brings beautiful snowy landscapes and cozy evenings, but it also comes with the risk of slips and falls due to snow and ice. Injuries like sprained ankles, wrist fractures, and back pain are common during the colder months. Fortunately, there are ways to stay safe while enjoying the season. Read below about preventing common injuries from snow and ice.

1. Wear Proper Footwear

Wearing shoes or boots with good traction is the first step in preventing slips on icy surfaces. Look for footwear with rubber soles and deep treads, which help grip the ground better than flat-soled shoes.

2. Warm Up Before Going Outside

Even if you’re just shoveling snow or walking to your car, take a few minutes to warm up your muscles. Cold, stiff muscles are more prone to injury. Gentle stretches and mobility exercises can help loosen up your joints and improve circulation before heading outdoors.

3. Shovel Smart

Shoveling snow is a common winter activity that can easily lead to back strain if done incorrectly. Use a shovel with a long handle to avoid bending too much, lift with your legs (not your back), and take frequent breaks. Pushing the snow rather than lifting it can also reduce the risk of injury.

4. Stay Alert on Slippery Surfaces

When walking on icy or snowy surfaces, take short, careful steps, and keep your hands free for balance. If possible, spread salt or sand on your driveway or walkway to improve traction and reduce the chance of slipping.

5. Strengthen Your Core

A strong core helps with balance and stability, both of which are essential for navigating icy conditions. Incorporating exercises like planks, bridges, and stability ball work into your routine can improve your balance and reduce your risk of falls.

Staying mindful and prepared can help you enjoy the beauty of winter without the worry of injury. These simple steps go a long way in preventing common winter accidents.
