The holiday season can be one of the busiest times of the year, and for many, it’s also a time when fitness routines take a backseat. With travel, parties, and family gatherings, it’s easy to skip workouts. But staying active during the holidays is key to feeling your best—physically and mentally. Here are some practical tips to keep moving while still enjoying the festive season:

1. Schedule Short, Effective Workouts

You may not have time for a full hour at the gym, but you can still fit in quick, high-intensity workouts. Try 20-30 minute routines that include bodyweight exercises like squats, push-ups, and planks, or follow a quick online HIIT workout. Even a brief workout helps boost your energy and keep you on track. Focus on what you did have time to do, not what you didn’t.

2. Make It a Family Affair

Get the whole family involved in physical activity. Go for a walk after holiday meals, try ice skating, or have a friendly game of football or basketball. This way, you combine quality family time with staying active. My favorite way to stay active is family bodyweight workouts in the living room and family walks.

3. Use Travel Time Wisely

Traveling for the holidays? Make the most of it by incorporating movement into your journey. Walk around during layovers, do stretches while waiting in line, or perform simple in-flight or in-car exercises like seated leg lifts or shoulder rolls. My go to is doing squats on layovers or rest stops.

4. Set Realistic Goals

Don’t pressure yourself to maintain your usual routine during the holidays. Instead, set smaller, realistic goals—like working out 3 times a week or staying active for at least 20 minutes each day. This can reduce stress and help you stay consistent without feeling overwhelmed.

Staying Active During the Holidays

Staying active during the holidays doesn’t have to be complicated. The key is to stay flexible, make fitness fun, and fit movement into your holiday plans. You’ll feel better, manage stress, and start the new year with a positive mindset.
